Cross Refractory Services is a 100% South African owned and managed company.
The company was originally formed in 1994 and is primarily involved in the installation of refractory linings in the heavy industrial sector. We are backed by qualified personnel with over 60 years’ experience in the Refractory Industry and are equipped to offer a complete service.
We operate a 24-hour service and are available at short notice to attend breakdown or planned maintenance requirements for all refractory related industries.

MEET THE TEAM
DAVID CROSS
DIRECTOR
Dave acquired the business from his father, Geoff Cross, in 2005.
Dave has over 35 years of refractory experience in heavy industry, initially based in Richards Bay prior to Cross Refractory Services contracting from 1982 to 1997 to the likes of RBM, Indian Ocean, Mondi and Alusaf. Thereafter, moving to Durban to join the management of Cross Refractory Services.
Since 2005 the company has grown substantially to service Blue chip companies throughout Southern Africa, servicing industries specializing in Aluminium, paper and pulp, sugar and crematoriums to name a few.
Dave is extremely grateful for his staff and what they put in everyday to make the company what it is today, a medium size entity that is capable of offering outstanding service to its clients at any given time of day or night.

RICHARD KRUCK
IN LOVING MEMORY
Richard joined our team in 2006 as a refractory artisan. He had well over 20 years of experience in the refractory field, previously managing and controlling a scaffolding/engineering concern in the United Kingdom and South Africa for over 10 years.
Specific refractory experience is in the installation to Boilers, Kilns, Gas producers, Copeland Reactors, Melting Furnaces, Ceramic fibre and Electric and Arc furnaces.
Richard had over the years earned his position as a site contract’s manager with a contingent of between 16 and 100 personnel, depending on the contract on hand.
Richards refractory knowledge is outstanding and was a key member of our team working closely with clients and project managers to obtain a final end product that both client and Cross Refractory services are satisfied with.
DALE CROSS
SITE SUPERVISOR
Dale joined the Cross Refractory team in 2015 as a general worker. Over the years Dale has worked his way up to a supervisor position and manages his teams well.
Dale is a “jack of all trades” with a special interest in Demolition, he completed his trade in Refractory bricklaying and has extensive knowledge of guniting, casting, shuttering and formwork.
SAMSON MHLONGO
SITE SUPERVISOR
Sam has been with Cross Refractory from the beginning and is a key member of our staff. Sam has been a part of most of the installations Cross Refractories have done and has over the years worked his way up to a Site Supervisor position.
Sam has great knowledge of relining Gas Producers, Kilns, Melting and Holding Furnaces and is a formidable asset to the team.
SHAUN SUTHERLAND
SITE SUPERVISOR
Shaun joined our Cross family in 2019 as part of the maintenance team, with over 24 years’ experience in his trade as an Earth moving equipment mechanic.
Shaun has since taken a keen interest in the refractory process and has completed his Fall Protection Developer US 229998 and US 229994 certification.
Shaun is very capable of managing teams on site.
GEOFFREY CROSS
RETIRED
Geoffrey, originally from the United Kingdom, came to South Africa in 1964 and brought along his refractory knowledge, starting his career in Vanderbijlpark at Iscor.
Geoff has over 60 years refractory experience in heavy industry with the following being some of the major installations previously carried out:
- 1964 – 4 Gas producer installations. 3 at U.S.C.O. Vereeniging and 1 at Cullinan Refractories.
- 1967 – Cement Kiln for Chilanga Cement Zambia
- 1969 – 2 Babcock Boiler Sena Sugar Mocambique.
- 1969/1995 – All remelt furnace rebuilds at Huletts Aluminium PMB – Rotary Calciners Lime Kilns Sappi Mandini & Sappi Ngodwana.
- 1981/1982 – 6 Babcock Boilers Matla Power Station.
- 1990 – Feralloys Cato Ridge ferro chrome furnace for TITACO.
- 1991/1994 – Rotacasting Kilns
- 1997/1998 – Iscor Pretoria Walking Beam Furnace.
- 2000 – Acid Resisting Tile Repairs – Mondi & Sappi.
- 2003 – Tioxide Kiln Reline (Joint Venture)
Geoff happily retired from Cross Refractory Services in 2005.
